Dr.Kamruzzamn

Professor Dr. AKM Kamaruzzaman was born on 9 February 1936 in the village of Haripur in Nangalkot upazila of Comilla district to an aristocratic political family. His father, the late Alhaj Maulvi Hasanuzzaman (Mr. Khan), was a former MLA and MP in 1972. Mother: Late Begum Jamila Khatun. He is the fourth of 4 siblings in the family. He started his education in 1944 at Nangalkot Junior Madrasa and Laksam High School under his father’s guidance. He graduated from Laksham High School in 1951. After passing SSC with astonishing results, he was awarded the merit scholarship. He studied at Sylhet MC College in 1955-56, passed HSC from the Department of Science and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College in 1956. After he graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1962 with distinction as a regular MBBS student, in 1966 he went to England on a government scholarship to pursue higher studies in mental illness. He was the first person to return to the country in June 1986 with the highest MRCPsych degree in Psychology and Neuroscience and joined Dhaka Medical College as an Assistant Professor. He established Zaman's Clinic in Dhaka in 1960 as the first private initiative for residential treatment of the mentally ill and in 1990, he established Zaman's Clinic and Midarhome in Nangalkot with a bed count of around 100 beds along with 5 doctors in charge of overseeing the patients every week. Although he lived in Dhaka city, he had a dream of developing Nangalkot upazila in his heart. He migrated to his village Nangalkot. He became involved in politics for the development of the area in social activities along with medical services. He was elected a Member of Parliament from Nangalkot constituency in 1991 and 1996. He was the founding president of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh "DAB" in 1992-1993. He received the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Memorial Gold Medal in 2003. Moreover, he also received the party nomination for the Nangalkot parliamentary seat from the President of Bangladesh Awami League Sheikh Hasina in the Jatiya Sangsad elections on 22 January, 2008. To an indescribable hardship and struggle, and to overcome many obstacles, AKM broke his sweat to bring the hospital to its present position. Being an extremely proficient doctor and having extensive knowledge in mental health care, he opted for the hospital to flourish and further involved himself in other community services to help the impoverished and disabled. He donated family land in his area and set up 9 (nine) organizations in phases with his own funds:

  • He established Nangalkot Hasan Memorial (Degree) Government College on 09 February 1984 in his father's name.
  • Begum Jamila Memorial Girls' High School was established on 24th November 1984 in the name of his mother.
  • Established on 04 th January 1987 - Monowara Mahmuda Balika Dakhil Madrasa.
  • He established Nangalkot School for the Intellectually Handicapped and Autistic on 04 January 1986.
  • Founded in 1990 - Zaman's Clinic and Miderhome Hospital.
  • Founded on 08 January 1991 by: Dr. Zaman's Kindergarten.
  • Established on 21st February 2001. Hassan Jamila Foundation Complex.
  • Founded on 15th June 2012 - Baitus Salam Orphanage.
  • Hassan Jamila Computer Training Center was last established on March 26, 2019.
